The first logo I ever designed was for Foster Industries. A series of concentric squares of decreasing size, the logo evoked a vortex. Why I thought this might be a positive way to communicate my brand is beyond me. Well, I was 16, that's why. But trust me, it was bad. (See for yourself here.)

I advanced quickly, teaching myself photoshop and other design programs. In 1998-1999 I was the co-editor-in-chief of my Columbia Scholastic Press Association-award winning high school literary magazine, overseeing layout, design and photography.

I am most happy when I am designing a website. Stealing an idea from those dot-com days, I now paint my office in glossy white paint transforming it into a massive dry-erase board. This is my age indiscriminate offline collaborative user interface. I love showing it to clients so they can interface with it too.

From my dorm room at St. John's, I founded Foster Design Group creating websites and brands for small businesses. Business grew and I eventually moved to San Francisco working on projects for Visa International, including the Verified by Visa program. Countless projects disappeared in the dot-com bust.

Over the next three years, Foster Design Group, grew by leaps and bounds. After producing branding and design work for companies like Visa, CustomerCast, KPCB and many more, I closed Foster Industries in December 2001.

In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York, Shanksville and Arlington, FDG launched the "Zero Dollar Fire Sites" program where our designers volunteered to design, develop and host websites for any United States fire and rescue station free of charge. While the company is no longer, this is a pledge I maintain.

My love of politics began at an early age. I took my elementary school mock-vote in 1988 very seriously. I proudly voted for George H. W. Bush—I was one of only 4 kids who voted for Bush. Ahh... the innocence of youth! I clearly got Winston Churchill's ideas on liberal youth and conservative adults backwards. But that's okay, I wouldn't have it any other way.

In 2006 I joined Team Rolle to develop the website for the campaign and the new media strategy. I don't know that I had worked so hard on something since the Foster days, but I produced the most innovative website for a political campaign that year, leaps and bounds above what any candidate in Maryland developed. Using new social networking tools we were able to tap an untapped demographic. In the end our candidate didn't win, but it wasn't before I received a lot of recognition and press for the work I did on the campaign.

NEWS: "Politicians' Web presence benefits entrepreneurs, too"

Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, A, B, A, B, select, start. To the kids of my generation, this means something. What that is, I have no earthly idea.

I believe that in life you get as many continues as you seek to have. From the ashes of every failure I have built something new. As you might have imagined, I am working on building my next great success from the ashes of Justin Schuck Design Studio. But this time, it'll be a more collaborative process. ;-)

In March 2010 I was named the Creative Director for the Republican Governors Association. By leveraging my years of design and political strategy experience, this is an exciting opportunity. Learn more about the RGA at RGA.org.

Since a good portion of my design work was done in service to other companies, I do not own the rights to publish this work.
