On Days When I Miss the Taste of Your Skin

Poem • 2026

A poem about the persistence of desire after a relationship has ended—and the strange, complicated feeling of missing someone you had to leave.

On Days When I Miss the Taste of Your Skin

There are days when I miss the taste of your skin
the feeling of my nose on your nape
the smell of your hair
the electricity in your touch
the look on your face
as our bodies became one

I miss the light in your eyes
when you smiled

I miss the warmth of your skin
on mine

I miss the idea of tomorrow
always seemingly out of reach
of our never-ending nights

I regret my part
in breaking the vow we made

I regret the choices
made without thinking
what they would cost you
what they would cost me
what they cost us

I mourn the ways
we both lost sight of each other
before we could find our way back

to the love
the vow
the promise
the safety
the dream

Not a day has passed
when I didn’t question
every decision
every action
every moment I chose me over us

I miss the ache I felt
whenever our paths would part

I miss the joy of your presence
walking hand in hand
or arm in arm
through a crowded sidewalk
or along empty streets

I will always miss you
and the earthquake I felt
on that very first date

I remain unmoored

The edges of losing you have softened
but not the emptiness left in their wake

On days when I miss the taste of your skin
I crawl back into mine
and remember why I left
